Larnaca is the main international airport for Southern Cyprus. However, the airport does not interfere with this important tourist destination which offers extensive sandy beaches which runs alongside the seafront promenade (reminiscent of some of our UK holiday resorts) and McKenzie Beach with restaurants lining the seafront.
Larnaca has numerous points of interest including;
- in the centre Agios Lazaros (Church of St Lazarus) (admission free) which is a cathedral-like 17th century Orthodox church with a small Byzantine museum (admission charge) in which are gathered some outstanding examples of ecclesiastical art: icons, bibles, chalices, bishops’ mitres and robes.
- Larnaca Fort (admission charge) a rusting pre-World War 1 artillery pieces manufactured by Krups of Germany stand hub to hub in the 16th century fort’s lower level, part of which is surrounded by gardens and used as an open-air theatre.
Recommendation:
Recommend Larnaca for families who are looking for a day by the sea, with safe swimming, sunbathing, childrens’ entertainment arcades with easy access to a variety of fast food and quality restaurants and shops. Both the main promenade and McKenzie Beach offer a range of reasonably priced cafes and restaurants for a good quality full English breakfast (usually served until 2pm) lunch and evening meals.
Shopping behind the seafront (in the old town) offers much variety; the larger well known stores are more widespread across the town. Car parking off the seafront is plentiful and cheap. |
