troodos mountains, cyprus |
The range dominates the western half of the island, a citadel that guards well its reserves of nature, religion, agriculture and human life. The mountains rise up from sea-level in a steepening swell that gathers momentum the higher it reaches until arriving at the summit (1,952m) of Mount Olympus. The summit is a military base and the snow capped slopes attract skiers in winter.
UNESCO has included nine historic Byzentine churches in the Troodos Mountains in its World Cultural Heritage Site classification. Cycling, mountain–biking is a big attraction in the Troodos Mountains or simply explore the beautiful Cypriot villages and hidden treasures which turn up regularly while travelling and exploring this magnificent region.
Recommendation: Some roads in the Troodos Mountains are only suitable for four wheel drive vehicles. If in doubt, find another route and remember, petrol stations are not around every bend. So fill up before exploring the Troodos treasures!
